Grandfather Mountain [1] is a mountain, a non-profit attraction, and a North Carolina state park near Linville, North Carolina. At 5,946 feet (1,812 m), it is the highest peak on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains , one of the major chains of the Appalachian Mountains .
The park has a total of seven trails. There is a 2.5-mile (4.0 km) loop trail around Price Lake rated easy. The Boone Fork Loop Trail is five miles (8 km) and considered challenging. The Tanawha Trail is 13.5 miles (21.7 km). It passes under the Linn Cove Viaduct and wraps around Grandfather Mountain. [13]
Hiking or camping on Grandfather Mountain requires a permit. The Tanawha Trail passes several small cascades and crosses Boone Fork Creek. Around the creek are junctions with the Asutsi Trail and the Upper Boone Fork Trail. Also, a self-registration permit box for Grandfather Mountain is located near the Asutsi Trail junction.
Due to the nature of the terrain, hiking in the Linville Gorge can be a strenuous and challenging activity. Hawksnest Snow Tubing and Zipline, located along northern ridge of the mountain in the town of Seven Devils, offers zip lining year round and snow tubing in late fall and winter. Though no official trails go up Peak Mountain, Grandfather Mountain's hiking trail, Profile Trail, starts nearby on NC Hwy 105 (permit required). [3]
