The Edinburgh Festival Theatre (originally Empire Palace Theatre and later shortened to Empire Theatre) is a performing arts venue located on Nicolson Street in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is used primarily for performances of opera and ballet, large-scale musical events, and touring groups. After its most recent renovation in 1994, it seats 1,915.
It is also used as a venue during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. In June 2016 the Centre celebrated its 10th anniversary, which coincided with a programme of events to mark the 20th anniversary of patron George Mackay Brown's death. [5] In 2017, the centre was nominated for Best Performing Arts Venue in the Sunday Herald Culture Awards. [6]
Edinburgh Playhouse stage and right hand box in 2023. In recent years, The Playhouse has played host to a wide variety of artists and shows. It also caters to the youth of the surrounding area who are involved in stage experience projects and youth musicals projects in which children as young as 10, and young adults as old as 21, can take part in shows on the stage.
The show continues today with over 200 young people aged between 8 and 25 from Scouting and Girl Guiding in Edinburgh regularly taking part. By the late 1960s, the increasing popularity of television meant that fees for stars were ever increasing, and this spelled the end of theatre.
