Caïque is also the term for a light skiff or long, narrow rowboat used especially on the Bosporus, Turkey. [3] Historically, a caïque was a boat of 5–6 meters (16–20 ft) in length, and 1 meter (3 ft) in width, used mainly for transportation. It had a shape similar to that of a skate.

The practice of overfishing led to a reduction in the efficiency of fishing boats, forcing them to venture further afield in search of fish. For example, the yield per trip for hake was reduced by approximately one-third between 1900 and 1930. Consumption failed to keep pace with production, resulting in a decline in prices.
The boat was usually rigged with a spritsail mainsail and small jib with an unstayed mast. The early fishing versions used an oar as the rudder, more modern versions, however, have a regular rudder & tiller. The larger pound boat, built to the same lines, was generally around 30 feet, but could run to 50 feet in length, 10 foot beam.
