A mondegreen (/ ˈ m ɒ n d ɪ ˌ ɡ r iː n / ⓘ) is a mishearing or misinterpretation of a phrase in a way that gives it a new meaning. [1] Mondegreens are most often created by a person listening to a poem or a song; the listener, being unable to hear a lyric clearly, substitutes words that sound similar and make some kind of sense.
Jon Carroll, columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, periodically runs a story which gives the truth about "Mondegreen". A mondegreen is a mishearing of the lyrics of popular songs. The name itself comes from Carroll's mishearing of a line in a song from his youth, about a valiant man who villains killed "and laid him on the green".
Starland Vocal Band also included Jon Carroll (keyboards, guitar, vocals) and Margot Chapman (vocals). [2] Carroll and Chapman also became a couple, marrying in 1978. [4] The group's debut album was the self-titled Starland Vocal Band and included "Afternoon Delight". The song was a US number one hit [4] and the album also charted.

Jon Carroll (born November 6, 1943) is a retired newspaper columnist, best known for his work for the San Francisco Chronicle [1] from 1982, when he succeeded columnist Charles McCabe, to 2015, when he retired.
In 1982, Danoff and fellow Starland Vocal Band member Jon Carroll wrote "Who Knows How To Make Love Stay", a Top 40 Canadian hit for Doug and the Slugs. Danoff taught a songwriters course in 2007 and a music industry seminar (with Walter Egan ) in 2008 at his alma mater Georgetown University .
In 1976, the couple paired with Jon Carroll and Margot Chapman to form the Starland Vocal Band. Signed to John Denver's record label Windsong Records, they were most famous for the hit song "Afternoon Delight". [7] The group released several albums before breaking up in 1981. Danoff and Nivert later divorced.
