Lord Macduff, the Thane of Fife, is a character and the heroic main protagonist in William Shakespeare's Macbeth (c.1603–1607) that is loosely based on history. Macduff, a legendary hero, plays a pivotal role in the play: he suspects Macbeth of regicide and eventually kills Macbeth in the final act.
On 17 April 1811 he succeeded his father as fourth Earl Fife less than 2 years after his father himself had succeeded, and also as Lord Lieutenant of Banffshire, and as a baron to many minor baronies including Macduff, named for James Duff, 2nd Earl Fife by a Crown Charter granted by King George III in 1783.
