The Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site (PCMS) is a training site for Fort Carson. In 2003, the U.S. Army announced a plan to expand PCMS by purchasing additional land mostly owned by individuals devoted to ranching. Local residents and conservation organizations opposed the expansion. In 2013 the Army cancelled the planned expansion.

Camp Hale was a U.S. Army training facility in the western United States, constructed in 1942 for what became the 10th Mountain Division.Located in central Colorado between Red Cliff and Leadville in the Eagle River Valley at an elevation of 9,238 feet (2,815 m), it was named for General Irving Hale.
In July 1942, the First Special Service Force (FSSF), an American-Canadian commando unit in the lineage of U.S. Army Special Forces (SF), was activated at Fort William Henry Harrison, Montana. It was made up of three combat regiments, and a separate service battalion, with Headquarters, Maintenance, and Service Companies.
The battalion departed Fort Carson on 14 January and arrived at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait at 0400 hours on 15 January. Upon arrival, the battalion assumed duties as the Camp Mayor responsible for reception, billeting, land management, and force protection.
