C. & J. Clark International Limited (trading as Clarks) is a British footwear manufacturer and retailer founded in 1825 by Cyrus Clark in Street, Somerset, where its headquarters remain. As of October 2023, the brand has 320 stores in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and hundreds of franchises located in the Americas, Europe and the Asia Pacific.
In 1966, the Hanover Shoe Company opened a manufacturing facility in Franklin, West Virginia & Marlinton, West Virginia, and contracted shoe orders for Bostonian and JC Penney and made shoes for their own Hanover brand. In 1978, C&J Clark purchased the Hanover Shoe Company and moved their North American headquarters to Hanover, Pennsylvania.
The Shoe Museum in Street, Somerset, England exhibited shoes dating from the Roman era to the present day. The museum closed on 27 September 2019. In the 19th century Cyrus Clark started a business in sheepskin rugs, later joined by his brother James, who introduced the production of woollen slippers, and later, boots and shoes. [1] However, shoes are no longer manufactured there. Clarks Village opened on 14 August 1993 and gained over two million visitors in its first year.

It was founded in 1825-1828 by brothers Cyrus and James Clark.
As of 2017, the Clark family still owned more than 80 per cent of the company, according to The Sunday Times. [2] Lancelot Clark's branch of the family collectively owned about 25 per cent. [6] In 2008, Clark set up ethical footwear brand Soul of Africa, which raises money for South African orphans who have lost their parents to AIDS. [5]
