Apr 15, 1999. Messages. 898. Dec 16, 1999. #3. The Kalinga (Model 401) was designed by my uncle Frank D. Buck. He was my father's younger brother and he passed away in 1974. His tastes were very flambouyant and while we made them the Kalinga was one of the most difficult knives to mass produce.
I was told it was an early model, but I have seen a few different early models with different presentation boxes. No date code, just a three line stamp that reads BUCK, KALINGA, USA. I know the Kalinga first appeared in 1969. My guess is that mine is an early 70s model. The shown knife is made between 1982 and 1986. Haebbie.

I have recently aquired through a trade a Buck Kalinga Knife. The knife and sheath are in excellent condition. The original display box is beat pretty good but still serviceable. It has rosewood not micarta handles. Is marked Buck/Kalinga/USA on the blade. I believe it to be at minimum 15 years old, maybe more.
The Omni Hunter (especially 12pt fixed blade) is a good knife, but the Kalinga is an entire level above it. Wasn't sure if I'd like the Kalinga or not at first due to the very distinctive blade shape - but IMO it is one of the best new hunting knives out on the market for the last several years. Way to go Buck!
