Lengths up to 16 feet (4.9 m) are common; the most common is 8 feet (2.4 m). In use as early as 1900, rock lath (also known as "button board," "plaster board" or "gypsum-board lath"), is a type of gypsum wall board (essentially an early form of drywall) with holes spaced regularly to provide a 'key' for wet plaster. [3] Rock lath was typically produced in sheets sized 2 by 4 feet (610 by 1,220 mm).
Homasote was widely used as wall sheeting from the 1940s into the 1970s. Due to the development of more fire-resistant gypsum board, it has decreased in popularity as a wall sheeting. Homasote is found in studio spaces and featured in many art institutions as a wall covering and doubling as a type of cork board.
A gypsum block is made of gypsum plaster and water. The manufacturing process [1] is automated at production plants where raw gypsum (CaSO 4 ·2H 2 O) is ground and dried, then heated to remove three-quarters of the bound water and thus transformed into calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaSO 4 ·½H 2 O), also known as gypsum plaster, stucco, calcined gypsum or plaster of Paris.

Being fireproof, it will not smoke at all upon direct contact with flame, and is a two-hour firewall at a 3.5 in (89 mm) (or normal 2 in × 4 in (51 mm × 102 mm) stud wall) application, per ASTM E-814 testing (UL 1479).
