The 2007 general was held on 14 April where governorship and state assembly representatives were elected. A week later, on 21 April, the presidential and national assembly elections took place. The late Umaru Yar'Adua won the highly controversial election for the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and was sworn in on 29 May.
The last regular gubernatorial elections for both states were in 2016. The All Progressives Congress' Rotimi Akeredolu was defending the Governor's office of Ondo while APC-turned-PDP Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki was defending his office. Both won reelection, leading to no net change in terms of overall party control of governorships.
In the event of a vacancy, the governor is succeeded by the second-highest-ranking state official; the deputy governor. As of 12 November 2024 [update] , there are 21 states with APC governors, 12 states with PDP governors, 1 state each with APGA , Labour and NNPP governors.
In the 10 other states, elections were delayed until the current incumbent had served their full term. Governors are normally elected for a four-year term during the national elections in which the president and members of the upper and lower house are also elected, as are the state legislators.
The two main contenders registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission to contest in the re-run election were PDP Governor Segun Oni, who won the contest, and ACN's Kayode Fayemi, who follows closely. The APC primary election was held on 22 June 2020. Osagie Ize-Iyamu won the primary election polling 27,833 votes against 2 other candidates. His closest rival was Pius Odubu, a former deputy governor in the state who came a distant second with 3,776 votes, while Osaze Obazee, a former governor in the state came third with 2,000 votes. [4]
