In 1973, due to population projections, a new Granite City High School North was opened on Illinois Route 203 and the school in the existing building was named Granite City High School South. After only ten years, Granite City North was closed due to declining enrollment and the building sold to Belleville Area College .

The Greene family moved to different bases and spent three years in Mannheim, Germany before they settled in Granite City, Illinois, in 1976. Granite City High has won ten boys' soccer state championships in 1972, 1976–1980, 1982, 1987, 1989, and 1990, and the girls' soccer team won the 2011 state championship.
