The precise origins of the dimensions of US letter-size paper (8.5 × 11 in) are not known. The American Forest & Paper Association says that the standard US dimensions have their origin in the days of manual papermaking, the 11-inch length of the standard paper being about a quarter of "the average maximum stretch of an experienced vatman's arms". [2]
A size chart illustrating the ANSI sizes. In 1992, the American National Standards Institute adopted ANSI/ASME Y14.1 Decimal Inch Drawing Sheet Size and Format, [1] which defined a regular series of paper sizes based upon the de facto standard 8 + 1 ⁄ 2 in × 11 in "letter" size to which it assigned the designation "ANSI A".
For example, ANSI A is less elongated than A4, while ANSI B is more elongated than A3. The Canadian standard CAN2 9.60-M76 and its successor CAN/CGSB 9.60-94 "Paper Sizes for Correspondence" specified paper sizes P1 through P6, which are the U.S. paper sizes rounded to the nearest 5 mm. [ 32 ] All custom Canadian paper size standards were ...
The phrase ANSI character set has no well-defined meaning and has been used to refer to the following, among other things: Windows code pages , a collection of 8-bit character sets compatible with ASCII but incompatible with each other, especially those code pages that are partly compatible with ISO-8859, most commonly Windows Latin 1
A code point is a value or position of a character in a coded character set. [10] A code space is the range of numerical values spanned by a coded character set. [10] [12] A code unit is the minimum bit combination that can represent a character in a character encoding (in computer science terms, it is the word size of the character encoding).
The CP/LD format defines a flexible, extensible, machine readable format that links HTML5 documents with content to JSON-LD graphs for the data and semantics. [1]The Linked Document part of the standard outlines the minimal characteristics of documents, whereas the Content Profile part describes how to extend and refine rules for specific use cases.
Can choose paper from manual feed, trays, cassettes. Paper can be duplexed horizontally or vertically. Paper can be oriented in portrait, landscape, or 180 degree rotation of the former two. Font: Supports bitmap or TrueType fonts, 8 or 16-bit code points. Choosing character set uses different symbol set code from PCL 5.
The larger character set made it possible to create documents in a combination of languages such as English and French (though French computers usually use code page 850), but not, for example, in English and Greek (which required code page 737). Apple Computer introduced their own eight-bit extended ASCII codes in Mac OS, such as Mac OS Roman.
