Croup (/ k r uː p / KROOP), also known as croupy cough, is a type of respiratory infection that is usually caused by a virus. [2] The infection leads to swelling inside the trachea, which interferes with normal breathing and produces the classic symptoms of "barking/brassy" cough, inspiratory stridor and a hoarse voice. [2]
In this condition there can be inflammation of the linings of the trachea. A condition called tracheo-bronchitis can be caused, when the mucous membrane of the trachea and bronchi swell. A collapsed trachea is formed as a result of defect in the cartilage, that makes the cartilage unable to support the trachea and results in dry hacking cough.
The swollen throat is often accompanied by a serious respiratory condition, characterized by a brassy or "barking" cough, stridor, hoarseness, and difficulty breathing; and historically referred to variously as "diphtheritic croup," [13] "true croup," [14] [15] or sometimes simply as "croup."

Influenza typically causes more severe illness than parainfluenza. While both can cause upper respiratory symptoms, influenza is more likely to result in high fever, body aches, and fatigue. Parainfluenza often produces milder, cold-like symptoms such as runny nose, cough, and low-grade fever. [35]
The cough is usually mild compared to that accompanying influenza. [4] While a cough and a fever indicate a higher likelihood of influenza in adults, a great deal of similarity exists between these two conditions. [24] A number of the viruses that cause the common cold may also result in asymptomatic infections. [25] [26]
The trachea can be affected by inflammation or infection, usually as a result of a viral illness affecting other parts of the respiratory tract, such as the larynx and bronchi, called croup, that can result in a cough. Infection with bacteria usually affects the trachea only and can cause narrowing or even obstruction.
