School is out for the summer and Las Cruces’ local movie theatre is kicking off their Summer Kids Series of free weekly movies at Cineport 10.
The Rio Grande Theatre in Las Cruces, New Mexico was opened on July 29, 1926. The theatre was built by Seale and Dyne and operated by the Central Theatres Corporation of Denver. The first movie shown was the silent movie Mare Nostrum, directed by Rex Ingram. Fox West Coast Theatres bought the Rio Grande Theatre in October 1929.

The Fountain family ran the Mesilla Valley Opera House and built the Fountain Theatre in Old Mesilla near Las Cruces. The theater was rebuilt in 1905 for stage plays and musical concerts, and is the oldest motion picture theater in New Mexico. It is currently operated by the Mesilla Valley Film Society.
