This list includes institutions that sponsored athletic programs that competed at the highest level in the NCAA (Division I 1973-present, University Division 1957-1973). Schools that were deemed major schools in athletics before 1957 are not included in this list.
Texas State University offers over 200 bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs from its ten colleges. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) by the U.S. Department of Education.
Hundreds of colleges are vying to join this rarified group. In the past two decades, 32 universities have made the leap to Division I. Like Georgia State, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the University of Texas at San Antonio, among others, have added football — the sport with the most potential to lead to big paydays.
All schools do not provide athletic scholarships to students. Conference affiliations listed in this table are primary affiliations as of the current 2024–25 school year. Many schools will house some sports in other conferences if their primary leagues do not sponsor a given sport.
