Certain late-model T-72 tanks featured Kontakt-5 ERA, a form of universal ERA partly effective against kinetic penetrators. It was added to the T-72 as a response to testing conducted by the Soviet Union against captured Israeli Magach-4 tanks which found that the glacis of the T-72 could be penetrated by the 105mm M111 APDSFS Hetz ammunition ...
An alleged example of this is the dismal performance of Iraqi T-72 models during the 1991 Gulf War and the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In each conflict, Iraqi T-72s failed to destroy a single M1 Abrams tank, even after scoring direct hits.

[2] The tank is not to be confused with an Iraqi modernization also known as T-72Z, said to carry a ...
All of the tanks firing ATGMs through the gun were produced in versions lacking the feature (e.g. T-72B1 is a T-72 without ATGM), and I think these were typically the ones exported. The Iraqi T-72 is just a simple model of T-72, but since there's so much written here, it's definitely appropriate to have a separate article under the Iraqi name.
