A 28V DC battery provided emergency backup power. Aviation author Kev Darling stated of the Lightning: "Never before had a fighter been so dependent upon electronics". [72] Each engine was equipped with a pair of hydraulic pumps, one of which powered the flight-control systems and the other power for the undercarriage, flaps, and airbrakes ...
A fluid power system has a pump driven by a prime mover (such as an electric motor or internal combustion engine) that converts mechanical energy into fluid energy, Pressurized fluid is controlled and directed by valves into an actuator device such as a hydraulic cylinder or pneumatic cylinder, to provide linear motion, or a hydraulic motor or pneumatic motor, to provide rotary motion or torque.
The two most common methods used by land based arresting engines to apply the braking force are the rotary friction brake and the rotary hydraulic, or "water twister", systems. The rotary friction brake is simply a hydraulic pump coupled to the reel, which applies a graduated pressure to multi-disc brakes mounted on the reel.
That site has executed more than 1,200 inert load arrestments. Testing was delayed four and a half years due primarily to a serious problem with the water twisters, discovered early in 2012. [4] Existing water twister systems are fixed in their capacity to absorb energy. For AAG there is a variable energy dissipation by the water twister.

In aviation, a power transfer unit (PTU) is a device that transfers hydraulic power from one of an aircraft's hydraulic systems to another in the event that the other system has failed or been turned off. The PTU is used when, for example, there is right hydraulic system pressure but no left hydraulic system pressure.
Hydraulic transmission may refer to various transmission methods for transferring engine power to drive wheels, using hydraulic fluid: Diesel-hydraulic transmission , used in railway locomotives Hydrostatic transmission , using hydraulic motors to convert the fluid energy into rotary propulsion
