The Village at Corte Madera was developed by The Hahn Company and opened in September 1985, anchored by a 116,000-square-foot (10,800 m 2) Nordstrom and a 110,000-square-foot (10,000 m 2) Macy's. Spanning 441,000 square feet (41,000 m 2 ) of retail space, the mall was purchased by Macerich in 1997.
Corte Madera (/ ˈ k ɔːr t ə m ə ˈ d ɛr ə /; Spanish for "Chop Wood") is an incorporated town in Marin County, California. Corte Madera is located 3.25 miles (5.2 km) south of San Rafael, [7] at an elevation of 39 feet (12 m). [1] The population was 10,222 at the 2020 census.
The Market Place covers an area of 165 acres (670,000 m 2) [3] and has more than 120 stores, restaurants, cafes and theaters. Designed by Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta, it consists of monumental but extremely simplified cubic forms, with anchor stores marked by massive towers roughly 70 feet (21 m) high displaying the store name.

[9] [10] In 1987, Bonwit Teller decided to close all of its Californian stores [11] and its spot at the mall was taken by Bullocks Wilshire. [12] This was the first time that a Bullocks Wilshire store was located in the same mall with a Bullock's store.
