Inverness station was opened on 5 November 1855 [5] as the western terminus of the Inverness and Nairn Railway [6] to designs by the architect, Joseph Mitchell. [7] The station originally comprised a single covered passenger platform 200 feet (61 m) with three lines of rails, one for arrivals, one for departures and a spare line for carriages.
The station closed in 1965 but reopened in 1985; [12] today, the station is a public request stop, although it is only open during the summer months (one of only two such stations on the National Rail network, alongside Falls of Cruachan elsewhere in Scotland), [13] corresponding to the castle's annual opening times. Black Hawk Broadcasting Company established radio station KWWL in the hotel in 1947, and television station KWWL in 1953. [2] Studios for both stations were located in the hotel until 1958. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. [1] The 250-room hotel has been converted into a 90-unit apartment building.
[3] [4] The headquarters moved later to a permanent location at Raigmore House in 1941 [5] and the building reverted to hotel use and by the 1970s was trading as the "Royal Stuart Motor Hotel". [6] More recently known as the "Drumossie Hotel", it was operated by Shearings in the 1990s [7] but has since been acquired by Macdonald Hotels. [8]
