The Mississagi River begins in a small unnamed lake in Sudbury District and flows south 8 kilometres (5 mi) from that point to the border of Algoma District, then southeast through a north-east corner of the district, before returning once again to Sudbury District at White Owl Lake, from which it flows into Mississagi Lake at an elevation of 457 metres (1,499 ft).

This was a combined operation involving 2 battalions of the Brigade, elements of the 23rd Infantry Division and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) 4th Regiment, 2nd Division and two regimental task forces of the ARVN 22nd Division for a total of 9 battalions. The results of this operation included 55 PAVN/VC killed and 21 small arms captured.

The Navy contribution would be RIVFLOT 1, comprising two river assault squadrons (RAS 9 and RAS 11), each with two river assault divisions under them. The basic mission of RIVFLOT 1 was to transport Army troops to battle zones and support them in battle. The craft the Navy acquired for this task was the ATC, a modified LCM-6.
