Stephen Swett allegedly built this house in 1670 under the name "Blue Anchor Tavern". The structure which consisted of a "typical' 17th-century single-room with a chimney bay end remained unaltered until 1720. During this latter time the roof was re-orientated, and a second single-room unit was added to the northern part of the original block.
These two halves were joined together in Beverly at some point in time based on the side-by-side framing and differences in roof pitch. The lean-to on the east side has since been raised from its original height to two-stories. [34] The Old Castle: Rockport 1712
The right exterior portion of the house is the original single cell structure. On the left side is a more modern cell which was sometime in 1695 or 1696 to form the saltbox structure. A lean-to and additional wings were added to the house during and after the 18th century.
A single-pitched roof can be a smaller addition to an existing roof, known in some areas as a lean-to roof, and a "outshot", "catslide", or skillion roof in others. Some Saltbox homes were expanded by the addition of such a roof, often at a shallower pitch than the original roof. Single-pitched roofs are used beneath clerestory windows.
