Penetanguishene (/ p ɛ n ɪ ˈ t æ ŋ ɡ w ɪ ʃ iː n / ⓘ, sometimes shortened to Penetang) is a town in Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada. It is located on the southeasterly tip of Georgian Bay . Incorporated on February 22, 1882, this bilingual ( French and English ) community has a population of 8,962 in the Canada 2016 Census .
They are counted within the census division. County Council is composed of the mayors and deputy mayors of each of the sixteen towns and townships which comprise the County of Simcoe. The head of County Council is called the Warden and is elected for a one-year term by the council members at the Inaugural Meeting, held each December.

The population in 1846 was about 200. The settlement had a church, a post office, four stores, three taverns, a tannery, two blacksmiths, four shoemakers, a tailor, and two furniture makers. A grist mill could be found about a mile away. [9] In 1869, the population was 1200. Construction of the Monck Road began in 1866 and was completed in 1873.
The Beausoleil First Nation occupies three Indian reserves.Their main First Nations Reserve is the Christian Island 30 Indian Reserve, consisting of Christian Island, a large island in Georgian Bay close to the communities of Penetanguishene and Midland, Ontario, along with two nearby smaller islands, Hope Island, and Beckwith Island - both uninhabited.
