The Skyland Resort, originally called Stony Man Camp, was built in 1895 at what later became the highest point on the Skyline Drive, with a sweeping view of the Shenandoah Valley at 3,680 feet.
The Rockingham Springs Hotel was the first resort developed at Massanutten. In 1875, Gerald. T. Hopkins, a farmer, created a health spa from the natural springs. [6] A three-story hotel was built in the vicinity of the family hunting cabin (Hunters Cabin), which still stands at the present-day Hopkins Park, near the intersection of Lanier Lane and Massanutten Drive.
The most significant building in the district is the hotel. The brick and frame hotel is four stories with a mansard roof in a version of the Second Empire style. The ground floor is of brick, with stuccoed second and third floors, and a pressed -metal treatment on the attic or fourth floor. A porch extends across the front and rear.
