Crosby's Opera House (1865–1871) was an opera house in Chicago, Illinois, founded by Uranus H. Crosby, destroyed by fire; Grand Opera House (1872–1958), built at 546 N. Clark Street (119 N. Clark Street today) by John Austin Hamlin; Chicago Opera House (1885–1913) constructed in 1884–5, demolished in May 1913
In 1888 the well known painter and scenic designer Ernest Albert re-designed the interior of the opera house. [2] In 1912 the theatre was renamed George M. Cohan's Grand Opera House when George M. Cohan and Sam H. Harris took over the lease of the theatre. They operated the theatre into the early 1920s.
Built for the Chicago Civic Opera, it has been home to the Lyric Opera of Chicago since 1954 and the Joffrey Ballet since 2021. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] It is part of a complex with a 45-story office tower and two 22-story wings, known as the Civic Opera Building that opened November 4, 1929 and features Art Deco details.

Hull House, the social settlement house of Chicago, had from the 1890s a theatre program under Laura Dainty Pelham which performed the Chicago premiers of numerous of the new plays of Galsworthy, Ibsen, and George Bernard Shaw. In 1912 Maurice Browne founded the Little Theater in Chicago, crediting Pelham's Hull House influence. [5]
