The French Sixth Army, on the right of the Tenth, advanced steadily from the southwest, reaching the Vesle River on 3 August. By 28 July this army included the American 3d, 4th, 28th, and 42d Divisions. The 4th and 42d Divisions were under control of the I Corps, the first American corps headquarters to participate in combat.

In 1916, following many losses among the original naval volunteers, the division was transferred to the British Army as the 63rd (Royal Naval) Division, re-using the number from the disbanded second-line 63rd (2nd Northumbrian) Division Territorial Force. As an Army formation, it fought on the Western Front for the remainder of the war.
It commanded the 1st Naval Division and 2nd Naval Division also including 3rd Naval Division throughout; one division held the land front, the other the sea front. It was still in existence at the end of the war [ 2 ] in the 4th Army , Heeresgruppe Kronprinz Rupprecht on the Western Front , still holding the extreme right of the line.
