The weekly Roanoke Rapids Herald was founded in 1914 by editor and publisher J.T. Stainback. From 1929 to 1947 the newspaper was owned and edited by Carroll Wilson. The newspaper was purchased by Milton and James Wick—later Wick Communications—in 1947.
Roanoke Rapids High School opened in 1921. It was the brainchild of local industrialist Samuel Paterson and was intended to be the centerpiece of the entire Roanoke Rapids community. The school was designed by Hobart Upjohn and cost ten times the average high school building in the state.

Recognizing the serious need for additional educational opportunities in Roanoke Rapids, a group of residents asked the North Carolina General Assembly to grant them a charter for a school district. It was adopted February 26, 1907. In 1908, A.E. Akers was chosen among 70 applicants as the first superintendent at an annual salary of $1,000.
Carolina Crossroads is a 1,000-acre (4.0 km 2) planned entertainment development near Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina located near the intersection of I-95 and US 158.The development was hoped to bring new jobs to the area which had been affected in recent years as textile mills closed and jobs moved out of the area.
At the north end, the line initially crossed the Roanoke River near Roanoke Rapids on a 1,040-foot long bridge to connect the line to Gaston.
