It is a privately held company that is family-owned, based in Hickory, North Carolina, where it was originally founded in 1944 by Parks Underdown as the "Hickory Springs Manufacturing Company."
The mall opened August 1978, as the second mall in Hickory, the first being Catawba Mall (was Catawba Furniture Mall. Now a U-Haul storage and rental store).
