By 1878, there were 32 stores in the town. For a number of years, Norway had the fastest growing population of any similar town in the state. The 1.45 mile (2.3 km) line connected Norway village with the Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railroad (later Grand Trunk Railroad) at South Paris. [5]

Charleston was first settled as early as 1795 by Charles Vaughan. The land was granted on July 14, 1802, by the Massachusetts General Court to John Lowell. Known as T2 R5 NWP, or Township 2, Range 4, North of the Waldo Patent, it was incorporated on February 16, 1811, as New Charlestown, to distinguish it from Charlestown, Massachusetts, when that state included the province of Maine.

Saco City Hall is located at 300 Main Street in downtown Saco, Maine. It is a transitional Greek Revival - Italianate brick building, designed by Thomas Hill and built in 1855. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
