This organized the state into seven judicial districts, each consisting of groups of parishes. In 1816, the first official map of the state used the term parish, as did the 1845 constitution. Since then, the official term for Louisiana's primary civil divisions has been parishes.
Most Louisiana school districts are parish school districts while some are city school districts. The U.S. Census Bureau counts both types as independent governments. Special School District 1, which has gifted education facilities, is directly under the authority of the state government, not counted by the Census Bureau as its own government.

As of the 2010 census, the CSA had a population of 604,784 (though a 2015 estimate placed the population at 627,146).
