Lexically, chakra is the Indic reflex of an ancestral Indo-European form *kʷékʷlos, whence also "wheel" and "cycle" (Ancient Greek: κύκλος, romanized: kýklos). [10] [3] [4] It has both literal [11] and metaphorical uses, as in the "wheel of time" or "wheel of dharma", such as in Rigveda hymn verse 1.164.11, [12] [13] pervasive in the earliest Vedic texts.
The ragas within the chakra differ only in the dhaivatam and nishadam notes (D and N), as illustrated below. The name of each of the 12 chakras suggest their ordinal number as well. [1] [4] Indu stands for the moon, of which we have only one – hence it is the first chakra. Nētra means eyes, of which we have two – hence it is the second.
The Guru Chakra is located above the head, just below Sahasrara proper. It is white, with 12 white petals, upon which is written guru . It contains a circular moon region, within which is a downward pointing triangle containing a jeweled altar, with the crescent moon below and circular bindu above.
The Sri Yantra in diagrammatic form, showing how its nine interlocking triangles form a total of 43 smaller triangles. In the Shri Vidya school of Hindu tantra, the Sri Yantra ("sacred instrument"), also Sri Chakra is a diagram formed by nine interlocking triangles that surround and radiate out from the central point.
The word Chakra (चक्र) derives from the Sanskrit word meaning "wheel," as well as "circle" and "cycle". [4] The term chakra is also used to denote yantras (mystic diagrams), variously known as trikoṇa-cakra, aṣṭakoṇa-cakra, etc. Chakras are also part of the subtle body as taught by Tibetan Buddhism.
What varies from chart to chart is the enumeration of these houses, i.e., which sign is the first house, which is the second, and so forth. This is determined by the position of the Lagna (the Ascendant , or the longitudinal point of the zodiac that was rising in the East at birth.)
Manuscript painting of a yogin in meditation, showing the chakras and the three main channels (nadis) of the subtle body. A small serpent, symbolising the Kundalini, climbs up the central sushumna channel; she will pierce each chakra as she climbs. When she reaches the head she will unite with Shiva; the yogin will then be liberated in his body.
Rishi, meaning sage, is the seventh chakra representing the seven sages. Vasu stands for the eight vasus of Hinduism. Brahma comes next of which there are 9. The 10 directions, including akash (sky) and patal (nether region), is represented by the tenth chakra, Disi. Eleventh chakra is Rudra of which represents the eleven names of Lord Shiva.
