Comprising two links courses, Ballybunion was previously ranked at number seven in Golf Digest ' s "100 Best Courses Outside the USA". [1] [2] While, due to its remote location, the course has not been selected for many top championship events, [citation needed] the club's "Old Course" hosted the Irish Open on the European Tour in 2000. [3]
In 2024, Golf Digest ranked the Old Course at Lahinch #27 on their list of the world's greatest golf courses. [2] It was founded 132 years ago in 1892 by Alexander W. Shaw and Richard J. Plummer, officials of Limerick Golf Club. They laid out an 18-hole course, the original course had ten holes on each side of the road. [3]
Golf in Ireland dates to at least the mid-19th century, with the Royal Curragh Golf Club (the first golf club in Ireland) being founded in 1858. [1] The two "oldest governing bodies in world golf", the Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI) and the Irish Ladies Golf Union (ILGU), were formed in 1891 and 1893 respectively.
The Palmer North Course was the venue for the Ryder Cup in 2006, the first time the event had been staged in Ireland. The course also hosted the Smurfit European Open on the European Tour from 1995 to 2003 and again in 2005, with that tournament being played on the resort's "inland links" Palmer South Course in 2004, 2006, and 2007.
The current layout measures 6500 yards in length and has a par of 72. The three courses are: the Strand Course (par 72), a championship course, the Riverside Course (par 68) and the Old Course (par 64), which is where the club was founded in 1894. The Royal Dublin Golf Club, founded in 1885, is Ireland's third oldest golf club. It is a private members' club, with an 18-hole links course on Bull Island, Dublin, Ireland. The championship routing that we recognise today was by designed by Harry Colt in the 1920s.
