In the early 1980s DiMarzio introduced replacement pickups for Stratocaster and Telecaster guitars. These were of the stacked humbucker design, where the lower pickup coil functions solely to cancel hum. The DiMarzio "Super Distortion" pickup, introduced in 1972, was the first after-market replacement guitar pickup.
The pickups enjoyed some popularity, though Fender's single-coil pickups retained widespread popularity.
