The "Women's Literary Club" established a fund for the first lending library in Lafayette in 1897. In 1932 the "Les Vingt Quatre Club" started a library for children during the Great Depression, which consisted of 50 volumes located in the Parish courthouse. [1] The Lafayette Municipal Library was created by the Louisiana state government in 1942.
The Lafayette Library and Learning Center was first proposed to the City of Lafayette at the end of 2003. The city voted to support the Library in January 2004. [4] In 2004 the membership of the Glenn Seaborg Learning Consortium was finalized and funding was pursued. In November 2004 the project was awarded $11.9M by the State of California.
