In 1959, Dowding founded Beauty Without Cruelty which aimed to eliminate the use of animal ingredients in cosmetics, abolish animal testing in the cosmetics industry and discourage the wearing of furs. The fundamental purpose was to demonstrate that alternatives to clothing and cosmetics free from all animal cruelty were easily obtainable.
Also animal testing for cosmetic ingredients is prohibited since March 2009. The amendment also prohibited, since 11 March 2009, to market cosmetic products containing ingredients which have been tested on animals. [7] The amendment does not prohibit companies to use animal testing to fulfill regulatory requirements in other countries.
