The barony was created in 1869 for the son of the Duke of Norfolk. The title became a subsidiary title of the dukedom of Norfolk in 1975. Royle Hall was built in 1734 as the manor house for the Glossopdale estate. It was demolished in 1850 when Glossop Hall was built and was the residence of the 1st and 2nd Barons between 1851 and 1924.
