A. Ayyappan (27 October 1949 – 21 October 2010) was an Indian Malayalam-language poet in the modernist period. He is considered as the "Icon of anarchism" in Malayalam poetry. He was also an iconoclast figure who had a close friendship with famous Malayalam film director John Abraham (director).

Folk songs are the oldest literary form in Malayalam. [33] They were just oral songs. The Malayalam script is a Vatteluttu alphabet extended with symbols from the Grantha alphabet to represent Indo-Aryan loanwords. [8] The script is also used to write several minority languages such as Paniya, Betta Kurumba, and Ravula. [9] The Malayalam language itself was historically written in several different scripts.
