The historic district has three distinct sections. The main section is bounded by Mary, King, Meeting, and John Streets, north of Charleston's historic downtown area, and includes the Aiken House, surviving elements of the main railroad depot, and associated warehouses.
The Miles Brewton House is set on the west side of King Street near the southern tip of the Charleston peninsula. The 2-acre (0.81 ha) property is ringed by walls topped with iron fencing. The wall is lower at the front, with an iron gate leading into a courtyard area flanked by brick walls on the north and south, and on the west by the main house.
Frances Dill Rhett, whose husband was a direct descendant of Gov. William Rhett, donated the house to the Charleston Museum in 1975. [6] The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. [1] Since 1995, Historic Charleston Foundation has owned and operated the Aiken-Rhett House as a historic house museum.
In 1991, the City of Charleston considered buying the hotel for $3,420,000 and leasing it to the College of Charleston for student housing. [ 14 ] The hotel was meticulously restored in 1996 with a $12 million National Trust for Historic Preservation award winning restoration.
