In the past, it was not possible to change our web interface based on the preferences of logged-out users. These users couldn’t set a preferred page density, change the font size, or set a dark mode. Also, the MediaWiki skin and design architecture made it difficult to maintain two color schemes (light and dark).
This template allows for comparison of how wikitext appears in light and dark mode. Note, that Wikimedia's dark mode and light mode do not use these exact styles in these boxes. However, this template is a good start in showing how icons, styles, and the like will appear in different themes.

(WMF): With Vector, and "use legacy vector" selected, the left navigation area (just below the Wikipedia logo) as well as the entire bottom section (where the privacy policy, about wikipedia, disclaimers and so are contained) still have white-ish backgrounds (but the text appears to switch to colors designed to be on black/dark).
