World War II tank battalion structure - November 1944. It was formed in 1941 as a light tank battalion, originally as the 76th Tank Battalion and renumbered in May. [1] It first saw combat in 1943, when it deployed to North Africa on 24 January and then into Italy following the Salerno landings on 17 September.
The first Marines to use tanks in World War II were patched together US Army M2 light tanks in an ad hoc unit in the Philippines in early 1942, but details are scant. On 7 August 1942, M2 and M3 tanks landed on Guadalcanal with the 1st Tank Battalion. Later some upgraded M3s called the M5 were introduced.
