Each type is specific to horses based on factors of breed, age, and genetics. [1] Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy (PSSM) is commonly found in calm muscular breeds such as quarter horses, and Belgian drafts. However, any horse that can store excess amounts of glycogen, usually genetic, can develop this form of ER. [1]
First symptoms are usually muscular weakness, soreness and stiffness causing problems with walking and breathing. Within hours of first symptoms horse may be unable to stand and in 72 hours of the onset of signs mortalities may occur. [16] [13] [1] The mortality rate of atypical myopathy is high; only 30-40% of affected horses survive. [9]
White line disease is most often seen in moist, humid areas with large annual rainfall totals. The exact organism that causes white line disease is not known, but it is known to be caused by bacteria in the soil getting into a weakened spot in the hoof wall, such as a quarter crack, which then sets up a fungal infection that leads to the disease.
