The current head of state of India is Droupadi Murmu, elected in 2022 after being nominated by the National Democratic Alliance. From 1947 to 1950, the head of state under the Indian Independence Act 1947 was King of India, [1] [2] who was also the monarch of the United Kingdom and of the other Dominions of the British Commonwealth.
Rajendra Prasad, the first president of India, is the only person to have held office for two terms. [5] Seven presidents have been members of a political party before being elected. Six of these were active party members of the Indian National Congress. The Janata Party has had one member, Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, who later became president.
In the Republic of India, a chief minister is the head of government of each of the twenty-eight states and three of the eight union territories. According to the Constitution of India , at the state level, the governor is de jure head, but de facto executive authority rests with the chief minister.
