Guadalajara Airport has undergone significant expansions since its early days. In 1966, operations were briefly suspended due to safety concerns raised by the Technical Commission of the Mexican Pilots Association (Spanish: Asociación Sindical de Pilotos Aviadores de México ASPA).
In-town check-in service is a service offered by some cities such as Abu Dhabi, Seoul, Hong Kong, Delhi, Kuala Lumpur–International, London, Stockholm, Vienna and Taipei, where passengers may check in luggage in designated places within the city but outside the airport. This reduces check-in time and queuing at the airport.
The departures area includes a check-in area, a security checkpoint, and a departures concourse with amenities such as a Duty-Free Store, an OMA Premium Lounge, and a food court. Services for arriving passengers include customs and immigration facilities, along with car rental services and taxi stands serving both Arrival and Departure Areas.
The check-in area features 100 conventional counters, 86 self-service kiosks, 20 drop-off counters, and a space for future growth, covering 5,410 square metres (58,200 sq ft). Security check areas include 22 X-ray security belts and 6 additional belts for future expansion, across 4,740 square metres (51,000 sq ft).
The top floor comprises international check-in areas (F1, F2, F3), food courts, restaurants, multiple security checkpoints, and a 900 metres (3,000 ft) long departures concourse (gates 1 to 28) connected via a walkway to a satellite building (gates 29-36). Gates 1 to 18 serve domestic flights, while gates 19 to 36 cater to international flights.
