The petals (usually about 15) are oblong in shape and are 18–35 millimetres (3 ⁄ 4 – 1 + 3 ⁄ 8 in) long. [2] They range in color from whitish to deep pink or lavender. Flowering occurs from April through July. [3] At maturity, the bitterroot produces egg-shaped capsules with 6–20 nearly round seeds. [2]

Astelia is a genus of flowering plants in the recently named family Asteliaceae. They are rhizomatous tufted perennials native to various islands in the Pacific, Indian, and South Atlantic Oceans, as well as to Australia and to the southernmost tip of South America. A significant number of the known species are endemic to New Zealand.
