This is a list of dams in the watershed of the Missouri River, a tributary of the Mississippi River, in the United States. There are an estimated 17,200 dams and reservoirs in the basin, most of which are small, local irrigation structures. Reservoirs in the watershed total a capacity of approximately 141,000,000 acre-feet (174 km 3). [1]
The newer delineation work on watersheds and subwatersheds was done using 1:24,000 scale maps and data. As a result, the subbasin boundaries were changed and adjusted in order to conform to the higher resolution watersheds within them. Changes to subbasin boundaries resulted in changes in area sizes.

Many early critics of the Pick-Sloan plan were in favor of creating a Missouri Valley Authority (MVA). They claimed that the MVA would provide a more unified solution to water development on the Missouri River than the merged ideas of opposing bureaucracies. Ideas for the MVA were influenced by the success of the Tennessee Valley Authority.
