The nature of study changed at Moray College in 1997 when it became a partner college of the UHI Millennium Institute, allowing it to offer a far wider range of subjects for study through networked courses. In 2011 the UHI Millennium Institute gained full university status, becoming the University of Highlands and Islands.

The main campus is in the grounds of Lews Castle, Stornoway.
Inverness is linked to the Black Isle across the Moray Firth by the Kessock Bridge. Three trunk roads link Inverness with the rest of Scotland – the A9 north to Thurso and Wick, and south to Perth (carrying European Route E15) and the Central Belt, the A82 to Glasgow via Fort William and the A96 to Elgin and Aberdeen.
