Still under Heileman's direction, the company remained a local brewery, producing only 3,000 barrels of beer a year for La Crosse and the surrounding community. [2]

In 1999 the old G. Heileman Brewing Company's former brewery buildings in La Crosse were bought by a group of investors who founded the City Brewing Company. [2] This brought the brewing facility back in name only to 1858 when German immigrants John Gund and Gottlieb Heileman originally founded the G.Heileman Brewing Company in La Crosse.
The brewery, though, ran at near capacity while it served under Heileman and rivaled the La Crosse brewery in efficiency. Along with its own brand, the Brewery brewed Heileman's flagship brand Old Style, as well as Blatz, Grain Belt and Hauenstein. By 1981, Heileman was the fourth largest brewing company in the country.
Customers can stop in and purchase 16 oz four packs of the beer while supplies last. Each customer is limited to two packs. The release isn't the brewery's first sign-stealing beer.
Heileman's brands were acquired by Stroh Brewing Co. in 1996. In 1999, Stroh's closed and its Schmidt's-related brands were sold to Pabst. As of 2019, a "Schmidt" beer was produced by Pabst, but its packaging was derived entirely from the Minnesota beer. Some other old Schmidt's of Philadelphia brands are still owned by Pabst.
Heileman met fellow German immigrant John Gund, and they founded the City Brewery in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Early production was modest, and continued with little growth in the 1860s and early 1870s. In 1987, Rheingold was purchased by G. Heileman Brewing Company which continued to sell the beer but stopped using Rheingold Brewery or Breweries as a company name on the label. Sales of Rheingold Beer have been continued off-and-on by subsequent owners, with two gaps—one in the mid-1990s and another from 2013 through 2023.
