Halibrand started in Culver City, California in 1946. Its first product was a magnesium wheel for Indy cars , as a replacement for the wire wheels then commonplace. The slotted design favored by hot rodders is based on a sprint car design from the 1950s.
In front was an upper and lower A-arm suspension with coil springs over Koni shock absorbers. In back Sadler installed a low-pivot swing axle with trailing arms. A Girling disc brake with aluminum caliper was at each wheel. [3] Steering was by rack-and-pinion, and the differential was a Halibrand quick change unit.
The differential was a Halibrand quick-change unit. Depending on the gearset installed, top speed was between 143 and 180 mph (230.1 and 289.7 km/h). [4] The brakes were twin-leading-shoe Center-Plane mechanisms from Chrysler with a custom GM designed Al-Fin drum made up of an iron face and inner surface and finned aluminum cover.
It was slightly larger all round than the 25 and was fitted with offset suspension and Dunlop (front) and Halibrand (rear) knock-off wheels to facilitate rapid pit stops. [3] Three cars were built in all; the first being essentially a development prototype, after which two cars were built for Clark and Gurney.
A forged magnesium wheel is 25 percent lighter than cast wheel. The main disadvantage of forged wheels is the high manufacturing cost. Owing to the typically high costs of finished wheels, forged wheels are still rarely purchased by non-professional drivers for regular road use.
Front and rear axles were both solid, with the front being an I-beam unit from a Ford and the rear also being Ford but with a Halibrand quick-change center. Suspension was done by Monroe coil-over shock absorbers and the axles were located by trailing arms and a Watt's linkage. Brakes were Mercury-Bendix and the wheels were magnesium Halibrands.
