BATA was formed February 1, 1985, out of the former Leelanau County transit combined with the Dial-A-Ride service in Traverse City, Michigan. Over the years BATA has changed routes and branding their reputation to riders with technology improvements on buses. [2] BATA launched their Bayline service on June 25, 2018.

Completed in 2012, the trail connects the former Traverse City State Hospital and Mall Trail to infrastructure along Silver Lake Road, including a Meijer store, a YMCA, and Traverse City West Middle School. Nearly one in three residents of Northern Michigan (with a population of 506,658 in 2020) reside within the Traverse City metropolitan area. Grand Traverse County holds about 62% of the population of the metropolitan area, with a population of 95,238 in 2020.
