Northern Ireland operated several diesel shunters as early as the 1930s. CIÉ's first diesels consisted of five shunters built by CIÉ in 1947/48. The initial two diesel mainline locomotives were also built in Inchicore, in 1950/51, and fitted with Sulzer engines and MV traction equipment.
The Downpatrick and County Down Railway is the only Irish standard gauge heritage railway in Ireland. ITG locomotives have been based there since 1995, when G617 was sent to the railway on long term loan. [4] It has since been joined by G611 (1996), [5] A39R (2009), [6] 146 (2010), [7] and most recently C231 (2014). [8]

The locomotives arrived in Ireland on 2 November 1976 and were purchased to facilitate 90 mph running on the Cork and Belfast lines. [1] A trade dispute resulted in a significant delay in their introduction; the first service was operated on 23 May 1977 hauled by 082 on the 14:30 Dublin Heuston to Cork . [ 1 ]
The Córas Iompair Éireann 113 class locomotives were the first mainline diesel locomotives used in Ireland, being built in January 1950 and October 1951 by CIÉ at their Inchicore Works. They were fitted with Sulzer 6LDA28 engines of 915 hp (682 kW) (uprated to 960 hp or 720 kW in 1956), with four Metropolitan-Vickers MV157 traction motors.
