KSHSAA divides schools based upon enrollment of grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 for competition and state and regional championships. The largest 32 schools in the state are class 6A, the next largest 32 become 5A, the next 64 become 4A, 3A, and 2A respectively and the remaining schools become class 1A.

The number of consolidations is half the size of this list because every district is listed on the left side. Atwood USD 318 and Herndon USD 317 consolidated to form Rawlins County USD 105 in 2003. Axtell USD 488 and Sabetha-Wetmore USD 441 consolidated to form Prairie Hills USD 113 on July 1, 2010.

Being located in the rapidly growing southern portion of Johnson County, USD 231 has had to manage the challenges of exploding enrollment numbers since the late 1990s. The district built the current high school in 2000. The building has been expanded several times since opening. Every school in the district has been built or renovated since 2000.
The current principal is Gretchen Pontious. The school colors are green and white. It is the only public high school in the school district. The total enrollment for the 2023-24 school year is 2,177 students, making it the 3rd largest high school in the State of Kansas tailing only Wichita East and Wichita Southeast. [6]
